LONDON -- Redbus Pictures has greenlit $10
million horror pic "The
9th Passenger," to be directed by Ellory Elkayam ("Eight-Legged
Freaks"), with Lakeshore Entertainment handling international
sales.
Redbus has also picked up U.K., French and
Australian rights to another Lakeshore horror project, "Madhouse," and
will take an exec producer credit on the movie.
These deals follow the success of Redbus Film Distribution's chiller "Cabin
Fever," which has grossed £1.7 million ($2.5 million) in
the U.K.
"
Redbus has clearly established itself as the leader in this genre in
the U.K., with past horror successes such as 'The Gift,' 'Jeepers Creepers'
and 'The Mothman Prophecies,' " said Redbus Pictures chief exec
Zygi Kamasa. "It made absolute sense to fast-track '9th Passenger'
into production for a theatrical release at the end of next year."
"
The 9th Passenger" is the story of eight students stranded on
a yacht, with a mysterious ninth passenger who may or may not exist.
It is scheduled to shoot next March in South Africa, with Peter Shaw
of UBA producing alongside Kamasa and his Redbus partner Simon Franks.
