British hit Bend It Like Beckham has surpassed $60m in worldwide
revenues with plenty more theatre time before the final whistle. Last
weekend its North American gross surpassed its UK gross after 12 weeks
on release and it is still playing in the top ten.
Gurinder Chadha's soccer comedy, which is distributed
in the US by Fox Searchlight, grossed $1.1m from 491 sites last weekend
to bring
its cumulative total to $19.2m. This took it past the film's homegrown
UK/Ireland total of $18.9m (£11.6m), where it was handled by
Redbus Film Distribution (aka Helkon SK).
The UK/German co-production has earned over $40m from international
territories to date, with a particularly impressive run in Australia,
where Icon recorded $8.5m (A$12.8m).
Other strong territories included Switzerland which saw Ascot Elite
take $3.4m (SFR4.4m); Germany where it grossed $3.3m (Euros 2.8m) for
Highlight; Italy taking $2.7m (Euros 2.3m) for Lucky Red; and Metropolitan?s
$2m from 368,615 admissions in France.
Sandrew Metronome Distribution saw strong returns of over $926,000
from Nordic territories. It took $419,200 (NKR 2.8m) from 50,000 admissions
in Norway, $293,000 (DKR 1.85m) in Denmark, $141,000 (Euros 119,800)
in Finland and $73,200 (SKR 568,700) in Sweden. Beckham took $36,569
(ISK 2.6m) from just two screen in Iceland for Good Times Distribution.
In Belgium Cineart grossed $269,819 (Euro 229,346), while A-Film Distribution
took $189,676 (Euro 161,225) in the Netherlands. Bend It Like Beckham
opens in Mexico on Sept 19 this year for Fox.
